B-52
1/3 ounce Kahlua
1/3 ounce Grand Marnier
1/3 ounce Bailey's Irish Cream
Ok, no one ever orders this drink for themselves. It is ordered as a shooter for someone who really doesn't want it -- but drinks it anyway. Do yourself a favor and skip it. Stir all the ingredients with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice.

Baybreeze
2 ounces vodka
2 ounces pineapple juice
1 ounce cranberry juice
This drink is nothing to write home about. However, it can be refreshing on a warm day. I've had quite a few female friends who like it. Stir vodka and juices with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice.

Back to Mixology Index

Black Russian
1 1/4 ounces vodka
1 1/4 ounces Kahlua
I'm not too fond of this one either. It is suggested by those who enjoy it as an after-dinner drink (or digestif, as the booze-brains call it). Pour ingredients over ice and stir. For a White Russian, add 1/2 ounce of heavy cream.

Bloody Mary
1 1/2 ounces vodka
3 ounces tomato juice
1/2 ounce lemon juice
7 drops Worcestershire sauce
3 drops Texas Pete sauce (not Tabasco)
Several shakes of freshly ground pepper
1 dash of celery salt
Freshly grated horseradish
Stir with ice; pour into old-fashioned glass filled with ice. Garnish with a stalk of celery. God, I love this drink. If you aren't a fan of vodka or tomato juice, skip it.

Brandy Alexander
3/4 ounce brandy
3/4 ounce crme de cacao
1/2 ounce fresh cream
Shake with cracked ice; strain into shallow chilled cocktail glass. This one is for my boss (and good friend) Dan. He loves these things. His variation: add some vanilla ice cream. Oh yeah, and drink a Diet Coke with it.

Back to Mixology Index

Cape Cod
2 ounces vodka
3 ounces cranberry juice
Stir vodka and juice with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice. Add a swizzle stick and serve.

Back to Mixology Index

Cognac
1 1/2 ounce cognac
3/4 ounce lemon juice
1 dash Cointreau
1 dash bitters
Shake with cracked ice; strain into chilled cocktail glass. Twist lemon peel over drink. I have not tried this one yet; I included it because it sounds pretty good.

Back to Mixology Index

Frozen Daiquiri
2 ounces light rum
1 teaspoon sugar
Fresh berries of choice
Mix with shaved ice in a blender; serve in wine glass.

Back to Mixology Index

Fuzzy Navel
2 ounces peach schnapps
4 ounces orange juice
Stir schnapps and juice with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice.

Back to Mixology Index

Gimlet
2 1/4 ounces gin
3/4 ounces Rose's lime juice
Stir with cracked ice; strain into chilled cocktail glass. Variation: Add 1/4 ounce more Rose's and/or a dash of bitters. Sil used to make me drink these things in college -- except then he used powdered sugar to remove the Old Spice taste from the gin. Ugh.

Back to Mixology Index

Gin-n-Juice
2 ounces gin
4 ounces juice of your choice
Sorry Snoop, this stuff sucks. Might as well mix up some Old Spice and Five Alive. Stir gin and juice with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice.

Vodka Tonic
2 ounces vodka
3 ounces tonic water
dash of lime juice
This one is for Scott and Coop. Stir vodka and tonic water with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice. Dash lime juice in glass or garnish with lime slice. Great summer cocktail. Classic.

Back to Mixology Index

Grasshopper
1 1/2 ounces cream
3/4 ounce crme de cacao (white)
1/4 ounce crme de menthe (green)
Shake ingredients with cracked ice; strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Back to Mixology Index

Hot Buttered Rum
2 ounces dark rum
1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
3 cloves (optional)
A pat of butter
Stir ingredients into a warmed mug; top with hot water. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and a lemon twist. Dust with nutmeg. Holiday fare only. Drinking this stuff more than twice a year is not recommended.

Back to Mixology Index

Hurricane
1 ounce dark rum
1 ounce golden rum
1/2 ounce passion-fruit syrup
2 teaspoons lime juice
Shake with cracked ice; strain into chilled cocktail or hurricane glass. A female friend of mine from college used to make these for me while we attempted to study Mythology. My grade in that class still remains a myth. Intriguing.

Kamikaze
1 1/2 ounces vodka
1 ounce triple sec
1 ounce lime juice
Stir all the ingredients with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice. Garnish with a lime twist. Good time drink.

Back to Mixology Index

Long Island Iced Tea
3/4 ounce vodka
3/4 ounce gin
3/4 ounce white rum
3/4 ounce tequila
3/4 ounce white whiskey (optional)
3/4 ounce triple sec
1 ounce lemon juice (or 2 ounces sweet-and-sour mix)
Stir ingredients with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice. Garnish with a squeeze of lemon. Does anyone ever order this drink for the taste? I remember drinking this in college. Now I know better.

Manhattan
2 ounces bourbon
1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
1 dash of Angostura bitters (optional)
Shake with cracked ice; strain into chilled cocktail glass and serve. Woo! Definitely a sipping drink. Try this with a cigar.

Back to Mixology Index

Margarita
1 1/2 ounces tequila
1 ounce Cointreau
1 ounce lemon juice
1 ounce lime juice
Shake with cracked ice; strain into prepared cocktail glass (moisten rim of chilled cocktail glass with a lime and dip into margarita salt).

Back to Mixology Index

Martini
2 1/2 ounces vodka (forget gin)
1/2 ounce dry vermouth
Stir ingredients with cracked ice and pour into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with either a lemon zest or an olive. If a black olive is used, the drink is called a Buckeye Martini; if an onion is used, it's called a Gibson. A dry Martini with a dash to 1/4 ounce of scotch is a smoky Martini, and one with a splash of olive brine is a dirty Martini. The vodka martini is my all-time favorite cocktail. How do you describe a classic?

Mimosa
4 1/2 ounces champagne
1/2 ounce orange juice
Pour orange juice over ice in chilled wine glass; top with chilled champagne and stir gently. Serve at once.

Back to Mixology Index

Purple Hooter
2 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce Chambord
1/2 ounce Rose's lime juice
1/2 ounce triple sec
Stir ingredients with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice. Be warned: this shooter is not made for it's good taste. By the way, I though Purple Hooters came from getting caught in those old spring-banded chest exercisers.

Rob Roy
1 1/2 ounces scotch
1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
1 dash Angostura bitters (optional)
Stir with cracked ice; strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Back to Mixology Index

Rum and Coke
2 ounces rum
3 ounces Coca-Cola
Stir rum and Coke with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice. I don't care too much for rum, but since it is a favorite of many people ...

Back to Mixology Index

Screwdriver
2 ounces vodka
3 ounces orange juice
Nothing too exciting here. Stir vodka and juice with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice.

Back to Mixology Index

Sex on the Beach
1 ounce vodka
1/2 ounce triple sec
1/2 ounce Midori
1/2 ounce Chambord or any berry liqueur
1/2 ounce peach schnapps
1 ounce orange juice
1 ounce sweet-and-sour mix
Splash cranberry juice
Stir all the ingredients with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice. A favorite of female friends in college. My question is, doesn't the sand irritate your buttocks?

Back to Mixology Index

Sloe Gin Fizz
2 ounces sloe gin
1/2 ounce lemon juice
1/2 ounce lime juice
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
Shake ingredients with cracked ice; strain into a chilled highball glass; top with chilled soda water.

Back to Mixology Index

Stinger
1 ounce brandy
1/4 ounce white crme de menthe Stir with cracked ice; strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with fresh sprigs of mint, and serve with a glass of ice water. Ugh! This stuff is horrid. We used to drink these on dares back in college. Not because they are potent, but because they taste like NyQuil without putting you in a coma. What is the point?

Back to Mixology Index

Tequila Sunrise
1 1/2 ounces tequila
Dash of Grenadine
4 1/2 ounces orange juice
Shake with cracked ice; strain into a tall glass filled with ice.

Back to Mixology Index

Tom Collins
2 ounces gin
1 ounce lemon juice
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
2 ounces soda water
Shake ingredients with cracked ice; strain into a Collins glass filled with ice. Top with soda and garnish with a cherry and orange wheel.

Back to Mixology Index

Whiskey Sour
2 ounces blended whiskey
2 ounces lemon juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
My mother is fond of this classic. Stir whiskey, juice, and sugar with ice; strain into a chilled tumbler filled with ice. Garnish with a cherry and an orange wedge.

Back to Mixology Index

Zombie
1 1/2 ounces dark rum
3/4 ounce amber rum
3/4 ounce light rum
3/4 ounce pineapple juice
3/4 ounce papaya juice
1 ounce lime juice
1 teaspoon powdered sugar
Shake ingredients with ice; strain into a chilled pint glass. Garnish with a pineapple wheel and a cherry. Float dark rum and sprinkle powdered sugar on top. Potent stuff, so be careful.
