The Chalet Restaurant
Little Switzerland, North Carolina
Located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, The Chalet is a bastion of culture and good taste in an otherwise bleak wasteland.
Atmospherics:I am not architecturally gifted, but I would call it Alpine. The main dining hall has a vast scenic view of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The decor is folksy, like a Ricola commercial. You almost expect cousin Sven and his
brother Oli to come in, arm in arm, from the fjords yodeling at the tops of their lungs. The organist in the lounge was a bit much, I thought, but not terribly distracting.
Menu:A large selection including steaks, seafood, pasta, and salads. The deserts are exotic and tasty. Helpings are not as large as your local steak houses or fish camps but the entrees are filling.
Adult Beverages:A large selection of domestic and premium beers are available as well as a selection of house and premium wines.
Prices:My wife and I had two entrees, no appetizers, no dessert, a glass of house wine each and a bottle of Beringer White Zinfandel. The tab was over $50.
My Overall Impression:Very favorable. The food was very good and the service was excellent. The bottom line is: it was worth the money to have a relaxing, elegant evening with good food and good friends. If you're touring the parkway,
I would recommend the Chalet. Blow a wad on a good meal. And, if you overdo the adult beverages, the Inn is right next to the restaurant.
Directions:I don't know exactly how to tell you to get there. It's right on the Blue Ridge Parkway and NC Highway 226-A.
Telephone:(704) 765 - 2153. Call for much better directions.
