Tried this one while throwing darts with Rick. A friend at work once explained to me that the word "bitter" is now a misnomer. You would expect a beer called bitter to be bitter. This seemed quite watered down. Too smooth for a bitter. I could see an attempt at a dark taste. Still a good bitter, but it needs a little more.

Bass Pale Ale
Bass Brewers Ltd.
One of my favorites. Smooth; goes down well. If you ever need a staple import, this is one of the best. A must try in my book.

Mackeson's XXX Stout
Brewers Whitbread PLC England
Dark, sweet, smooth. This is one of the best stouts out there. If you are brave enough to try a stout, do not overlook this one.

Watney's Red Barrel
The Stag Brewery
Monty Python has a skit where they lampoon this beer. The gist of it is that this beer isn't highly regarded in England. Probably doesn't cost anywhere near this much in the UK either. Not bad in my book, however.

Whitbread Ale
Brewers Whitbread PLC England
A fine example of an ale which tastes great on tap but leaves something to be desired when in a bottle. If your favorite watering hole has this on tap, give it a try. Smooth with a semi-sweet finish.

Newcastle Brown Ale
Newcastle Breweries Ltd.
This beer ranks in the top 10 with me. Quite possibly the best brown ale in existence. Goes down smooth and doesn't interfere with the taste of your food. Not too thick, not too thin, not too light, not too dark. This brew has just the right mix of everything.

Boddingtons Pub Draught Ale
Strangeways Brewery
Boddingtons Ale is known as the "Cream of Manchester" because of it's dense, creamy head. The nitrogen-infusion can allows the head to form as if it were straight from the keg. Aside from the sweet head, this beer is light and mildly bitter. Very refreshing. Be sure to bring a napkin.

Belhaven Scottish Ale
The Belhaven Brewery Company Ltd.
This ale is very good for the beginner. It was my staple ale in college -- that is, when it was on sale. I've graduated from college and this weak ale. If you are new to ales, give this one a try. It is sweet and very, very smooth.

Leinenkugels Red

I've tried this beer twice and each time it was skunked. At least, I hope it was skunked. If it wasn't its a definite loser. If it was ... I'll give it another shot.

Southpaw Light
Plank Road Brewery
This is my "cook-out beer". When I'm in the mood for an American-style brewski, this is the one. Smooth, slightly-sweet and refreshing. Goes well with all types of grilled foods. Price is a plus also. Well hopped for a domestic.

What can I say? I hate this beer. No flavor; extremely watered down.

I drank this in High School when I didn't know any better. I also didn't really like beer then. Hmmm...could there be a relationship?

Icehouse
Plank Road Brewery
Hangover city. This was the "Dude, let's get hammered" beer of choice in my fraternity. Probably one of the contributing reasons I'm not in Grad school yet. Easy to drink -- but potent. Have the bloody Mary and Alka-Seltzer ready by your bed side.

If you need a beer for watching a sporting event with friends, this is the one. It has fairly good flavor for a domestic.

Michelob Light

I really don't know what to say about this beer. It tastes almost exactly like all other domestics. Light on taste -- big on water. Remember when it was stylish to drink this? Me either ...

I heard an anecdote once about the taste of domestic beer. It's said that the reason all the major US beers taste exactly the same is because of the results of a taste test. Apparently, Americans like their beers to have no taste.

George Killian's Irish Red

This is another case where beer tastes great on tap but disappointing in the bottle. I don't know if any research has been done on this one, but perhaps it should.

George Killian's Irish Brown Ale
Coors Brewing Co.
Not bad for a brown ale. Not top notch; you cannot taste the quality as in the leader of this class, Newcastle. However, it is smooth and has a good attempt at a dark taste.

George Killian's Wilde Honey

Sweet and smooth. Light finish and very little aftertaste. This is not a beer you can drink all night.

Dixie Blackened Voodoo

Most of my friends like this one. A fraternity brother of mine in college swore by it. I've tried it several times and I must admit, I don't like it. It smells like soy sauce. Very dark and rich. See what you think.

Hornsby's Dark & Dry Draught Cider
E & J Gallo Winery
Sweet and tangy with a dry finish. I have never really enjoyed ciders. My fiancèe likes them as an alternative to wine coolers and mixed drinks. Much more staying power in the market than Zima. What the heck was Zima anyway? Moldy club soda?

Excellent. This is one complex stout. Big mocha hit. Hints of mellow oatmeal. Light finish. This is one of my favorite stouts. One drawback is the price, however.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

This is another one of my top 10 beers. Highly hopped and bitter. Crisp, refreshing and aromatic. I'm not a fan of cascade hops, but this one hits the spot.

You can find this amber on sale quite frequently. Other than that, I don't have much to say about it.

Sarnac Black and Tan

What the hell is this? Black and Tan can't be pre-mixed in my book. Traditionally, a Black and Tan consists of Bass Ale with Guinness Stout floated on top of it. This doesn't cut it.

This stuff has very little alcohol taste. Seems potent, though. Let the female in your life try it and see what she thinks.

I like this beer. Perhaps it's just college nostalgia, but I think it's very smooth and crisp. Good beer for beginners and people with beer phobia.

Corona Extra
Cerveceria Modelo, S.A. DE C.V.
My boss loves this stuff. He swears it will not cause hangovers. Not as good as Sol, but not bad with a lime. This is a country about which everyone remarks, "don't drink the water". My question is, why would you then think the beer is okay?

Murphy's Irish Stout
Murphy Brewery Ireland Ltd.
I have revised my position on this particular stout. Perhaps my taste buds weren't up-to-snuff the day I first tried this delicious brew. For those who aren't fond of the sour notes of Guinesss, this is the draught for you. Dark and heavy with a coffee-like aroma, this stout finishes suprisingly clean. Try it!

My friend Rick Ingersoll's favorite. I call this butter beer. Each time I try this beer it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I feel like my tongue was painted. Bad. Brings the word bad to new levels of badness. Well, maybe not that bad, but lord, it isn't good.

Pilsner Urquell
Taste like it was dry-hopped to achieve the perfect flavor. Light in color, but certainly not in taste. Very crisp, but still malty. One drawback is the green bottle -- this increases the chance of you beer being skunked. Light breaks beer down and ruins the taste.

Johnson's Amber Ale

I first tried this at the Southeastern Microbrewer's Invitational in Durham back in mid-March. This beer has a great hop aroma. Not quite as pungent as the Oregon IPA, but close. Mildly bitter. This one is worth a try.

Black Radish Beer
Weeping Radish Brewery
This brewery is proportedly North Carolina's first micro-brewery. They make a collection of quality brews, not the least of which is Black Radish. It is an intensly dark lager which tastes a bit acidic at first and then mellows to an uncommonly smooth finish. Goes well with German food. If you ever are near the Outer Banks of North Carolina, stop by the Weeping Radish Brewery in Manteo. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Samuel Adams Summer Ale
Boston Beer Company
You know, perhaps I'm getting wimpy in my old age. I like this tangy wheat ale. It says that it contains lemon zest -- which makes it very refreshing -- and grains of Paradise. Grains of what? The bottle mentioned exactly what Grains of Paradise were, but I had unfortunately partook of too many of Mr. Sammy's new concoction to be literate at that point. Tasty stuff.

Easy to drink but very bland flavor. When I look for a "bitter", I expect high IBU's and strong hop aromas. Neither come through in this unremarkable brew.

Not bad for a local brew. North Carolina is only now coming into it's own as a microbrew haven. This fine amber reminds me of Killian's Red. If you are ever in Greensboro, stop into the brewery and give it a try.
